TRAGIC VICTORIAN FIRE.
THBEE CHILDREN KILLED.
FATHER'S RESCUE EFFORTS.
DESPERATE FIGHT FUTILE. ! By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, July 27. Three children were burned to death when the bouse of a settler, Mr. Alexander Walker, in the Warragul district, 58 miles south-east of Melbourne, wsis totally destroyed by fire. 1 Mrs. Walker put the children to bed and left a lighted lamp beside them. Shei was working in a detached kitchen, and failed to notice the fire until it was too late to enter the burning room. The father of the children was badly burned in endeavouring to save them. He was setting traps on the hills when the outbreak occurred. As soon as he saw the flames he rushed to the house and attempted to climb in through the window, but was driven back. Mr. Walker then got an axe and smashed in the side of the house. However the room was a roaring mass of fire, and he had to retreat.
The children were probably dead at that time. If their father had arrived a few minut-03 earlier they might have been saved.
The nearest house is a mile and a-half away. As a result the parents had to attempted to rescue the children unaided.
