THE SCIENCE CONGRESS.

GATHERING AT ADELAIDE,

COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMME.

"It is not the fault of scientists that their skill has perfected weapons states the secretary of the Australian Association for the Advancement of Science, in a preliminary announcement regarding the science congress to be held in Adelaide next month. "Money is generally forthcoming to develop weapons of warfare, whereas it is not devoted to extending the usefulness of science in times of peace as in war. The scientist loves truth for its own sake, and his real desire is to servo mankind, not to destroy." Arrangements 'have been made for a number of excursions, lectures, reading of scientific papers and discussions during congress week, which will start on August 25. Delegates will be accorded a civic reception bv the Lord Mayor of Adelaide on that day, and in the evening Sir John Monash, the new president, will deliver his inaugural address. The iemtdnder of the week will be devoted to meetings and public lectures, the subjects to be dismissed including every branch of science. A number of social functions have been arranged, including a reception to be held by the Governor of South Australia at Government House, on August 26. The delegates will number over seventy, and will include representatives from important scientific societies of Australia and New Zealand. Theso representatives are selected generally for their eminent positions in the scientific world, and the appointments are designed to ensure the co-operation of the various scientific inKtitu/t&jns and .in the SouthWestern Pacific. The association aims at the advancement of mapldnd everywhere by the study of science and educa tion, but is primarily designed to encour- j age work in Greater Australia and New Zealand. . ' . ■' I
