A clerk named Cecil : William ?; White, recently employed by the Mutual Life and Citizens' • Assurance Company, Ltd.; was . charged ; before justices at J Hamilton I today on two counts of having passed: valueless cheques and on four counts of - having failed to account for -moneys: received on behalf of his employers. The amount involved in tfae first two charges was £57, and in the others a total sum of £58 lis 4d. ; s In opening the case, . Detective Sweeney said the circumstances were ;of the usual nature, a man ' having overdrawn his bank account and ; then resorting ■to the ' issue of valueless cheques. When seen by the police after complaints had been :made, White had' stated that -he 'expected £200 to? be paid " into his account by a: man at Hawera. Inquiries had been made, but no trace could be found of the financier. Accused, who was represented by Mr. Powell, pleaded not guilty, / and reserved his defence. ■ He was committed to the Supreme Court for trial..
