MUNICIPAL BAND.

AUCKLAND ESTABLISHMENT.

MUSIC AT CIVIC FUNCTIONS.

QUESTION OF BANDMASTER.

The establishment of a municipal band was decided upon by the City Council last evening; when the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, moved a formal resolution to that effect. This matter was first proposed last year, when the . principle of the formation of a band was affirmed, and it was decided that applications for the position of bandmaster be invited. This was done, and 28 applications were- received from bandsmen in England, Australia, and all parts of New Zealand. At last - evening's meeting • 'the; Parks Committee submitted three names from among the applicants as being the bast qualified for consideration in the . final choice. ' Some objection to the formation of a municipal band was voiced by Messrs. T. Bloodworth. : and F. W. H. Brinadon. The former said the cost of such an organisation would be much more than was anticipated by members of the council, and he thought the council could get better music in the parks than was now supplied by increasing the subsidy to the local bands v and insisting on • better pro- ' grammes. ' v "• V _" \ -'• The" Mayor, * however, , pointed out that it was time" the city had an efficient band which ; would .be ; available for ' public functions, adding that the "' council had ample material available among -its own employees. In this, he. was supported by, a number of" members, one of ; whom remarked thai he understood that during the visit of ' the Special Service Squadron the city had to' borrow one of the warship's bands to' supply music 'at > one ;of the welcoming functions:. The Mayor's resolution was carried,; and the Parks Committee was authorised to make an appointment from the three names selected.
