WELLINGTON, Thursday.
"The Council of Education has - advised against . prizes,' ' said x thej Minister , for Education, the ' Hon. : 0. J. Parr, at the conference of high school hoards. '/Leading educationists are against the prize system, and ■with' the number of ' boards and ! schools -we have ■; the amount that would be required would - astound you. "The Government . already : gives free. education to every pupil. ■* Is it reasonable to expect it to give prize money as well? The Government has to,find money; fbr schools and roads in the back blocks. Which is the more ; urgent need? ; Only [ seven out of 23 boards desire grants: for prizes." . - ' f - ■ '"" -.
