THE FLEET V. AUCKLAND.
VISITORS NARROWLY BEATEN
The early stages of the hockey match, Fleet versus Auckland, 1 at Remuera yesterday afternoon, saw Auckland on the attack, and E. Watts rid.
The fleet vanguard 'do several nice runs, clean, snappy pa£..i..g being a strong feature. Several brilliant movements reached the Auckland circle and only good defensive work by Roberts prevented a score. Auckland set up a series of offensives, catching the Fleet backs napSing, and- D. Alexander, E. Watts, and! L Watts all scored goals. The navy team's vanguard brought off many spectacular attacks, all the forwards combining excellently, and only greg.t defensive play kept the goal intact, ,Bowerman then initiated an attack or. the left flank, passing in to Atkinson who carried play to the circle. A quick transfer back to Bowerman saw the latter score with a hard shot. Tho Navy forwards dominated play till the spell ended: —• Auckland . . .i. . • 4 The Fleet > 1 The visitors' vanguard per medium of short, crisp passes, invaded Auckland's goal area, Morgan's shot going high. A further offensive movement saw a hard shot from Hill go just outside. A sortie by Auckland was short-lived, McWilliam hitting to Bowerman who transferred to the centre. An infringement against, Auckland gained the visitors a corner, from which Hill goaled. Auckland 4 The Fleet . . . • - • 2 Keeping up -a oontinuous offensive the Fleet vanguard had Auckland busily de- | fending. Several corner hits were taken but were rendered fruitless through good defensive work by Steele and Roberts. A finely-executed movement in the centre saw the Fleet vanguard race through to the circle and from a scramble - Morgan scored a clever goal | Auckland . . .. • » 4 The Fleet . . .. . . 3 Auckland pressed on the right and reached the circle, Fotheringham's shot being well cleared by Hickson. Another brilliant piece of combined work saw tho Fleet's forwards swoep up the field and baffle the defence. Cooper; made a remarkable save from a hard well-! directed 1 shot by Atkinson. Auckland were pressing when the final bell rang. Auckland • . • • .S 4 The Fleet 3 , Lieutenant Craven and Mr. J, B. Steele were the referees. CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES.
TO-DAY'S CONTESTS. The club competitions under the jurisdiction of the Auckland Hockey Association will be continued at the Remuera grounds this afternoon. Mount Eden and St. Luke's will be the contending teams on No. 1 ground, and as neither side has suffered defeat the contest promises to be highly exciting. Areta meet University on No. 2 ground, and a stub-bornly-contested game should result. The junior matches will also be played. The matches in the ladies' section are Arawa and Mount Eden, and Training College .A and St. Cuthbert's. Thes? games promise to be excellent contests.
