WRECK OF THE NGAHERE.
TIMBER CARGO ON BOARD.
PRIVATE INQUIRY HELD.
A private inquiry into the loss of the ! steamer .Ngahere was held at the customß, Office, Greymouth, on Tuesday, the collector of customs, Mr. H. A. Wild, presiding. It is understood that the evidence will be forwarded to the Marine Department, and if it is considered that a public inquiry is warranted this will be held before the Magistrate at Greymouth. The , Nganere's load of timber amounted to 444 tons, there being 157, super feet, all red pine, shipptd by Messrs. Wild and Robertson, pnd 1000 by the Midland Sawmilling Company. The insurances on this part of the cargo are £650 in the British Traders Insurance - Company, and £800 in the Alliance Assurance Company. There was no insurance on the coal.
No coal was produced at the State mines, at Greymouth, on .Tuesday, owing to the shortage of shipping, and until the Ngahere is replaced, other vessels will probably bo diverted to take coal cargoes. It is the opinion of a shipping authority that the Ngahere lies immediately over the bones of the Perth. It is a peculiar coincidence that Captain McDonald, formerly master of the Perth, should be in port to witness a wreck similar in all respects to that of the vessel he formerly commanded. He is , now in charge of the Coolana.
