CHINESE RESENT TAXES.
RIVER TRAFFIC STOPPED.
PARALYSIS OF TRADE.
Sun. PEKING. May 13. The Canton authorities have imposed a number; of new war taxes during tho past fortnight, including 20 per cent, on river traffic freight and passenger rates. As a consequence of this a general strike of launch and junk owners has been in progress since May 4. . Hundreds of towns in .the interior are cut off from Canton by the suspension of the services and trade is paralysed.
The authorities state that launch and junk owners have hitherto been paying fees .to pirates for immunity. Dr. Sun Yat Sen's Government proposes to use part of the proceeds of the tax to suppress pirates, but the owners of various craft have no confidence in the Government's professions, and demand the repeal of the tax.
