WHEAT HARVEST SHORTAGE
NEW SOUTH WALES CROP. [froji our own connispoyDENT.] SYDNEY. April 23. The final returns of the result of the wheat harvest for the season 1923-24 are available. The area harvested for grain •was 2.914,970 acres, including nearly 107,000 acres, which failed entirely. The area cut for hay was 694,140 acres, including 11,000 acres which failed. Tho fed-off area was 301,238 acres, making a total of 3,909,440 acres sown with wheat. The grain harvested amounted to 11,013,377 bags, equivalent to 33,040,000 bushels, or 11.3 bushels per acre. Tho anticipated yield was not realised, falling short of the estimate by rather less than 1 per cent. Hie advantages of fallowing are shown by the result in all the principal wheat-growing districts of the State. In some cases the fallow wag hot for the full season, but only during the summer; nevertheless the advantages are clearly demonstrated. The best relative result from fallowing was in the central tablelands where the yield was four bushels per acre more than on new land.
