AUCKLAND CHESS CLUB.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The 40th annual meeting of the Auckland Chess Club was held last evening. Mr. A. E. Layland presided over an attendance of 23. The report expressed satisfaction at the keen interest taken in the tournament games during the current year. The various competitions resulted as follows: —Club championship, J. A. .Moir 1, J. C. Grierson 2; intermediate level, C. Stewart 1, J. F. Sullivan, 2; open handicap, J. A. Moir 1, J. 11. Barker 2; afternoon players' .handicap, M. Freeman 1, C. G. Hall 2; summer tourney handicap, J. R. Barker 1, Dr. Bruce Mackenzie 2. The gold medal for the greatest number of wins for Auckland in telegraphic matches was awarded to Mr. K. Barker, who won all his games. A notable event was the donation by an anonymous donor of a handsome cup as a prize for an open challenge tourney. The winner was a veteran of the club, Mr, J. C. Grierson. At the New Zealand championships, Mr. Moir tied for second place" and Mr. Vaughan won the prize for the most .brilliant game of the tour nev. The election of officers resulted Patron, Mr. E. H. Abbott; president, Mr. A. E. Layland; vice-presidents, senior, Mr. H. H. Smith, junior, Mr 'rT. B. Williamson; hon. treasurer, Mr. F. Stubbs: hon. secretary, Mr F. B. Ilum&am ; hon. assistant secretary Mr. J. R. Barker hon. auditor, Mr. 11. N. Maddox; director of play, Mr. J. Moir; committee, Messrs. R. Barker, D. I. Jones, F. Sullivan, I. r. Mackftizie. It was resolved to formally open the season next Saturday by a lightning tourney, open to all chess players whether mem- I bers of the club or not.
