MOTOR FALLS OVER BANK.
BROWN'S BAY ACCIDENT. CRASHES DOWN 30 FEET. DRIVER'S SEVERE INJURIES. THREE OTHERS SLIGHTLY HURT. A motoring accident in which the occupants of the car had narrow escapes from serious injury, or perhaps death, occurred yesterday afternoon about a mile from Brown's Bay, on the road to Devonport. A motor-car carrying six passengers and driven by Mr. Frederick William Eaton, aged 47, of 153, Grafton Road, was proceeding toward Devonport, and in attempting to pass a large char-a-banc, Mr. Eaton drove to the side of the road and the car fell over a bank. It rolled over three times, smashing its way through tea-tree scrub for a distance of over 30 feet.
Five of the occupants, Mrs. Eaton, and Mr. and Mrs. Owen Coleman and their two children, a baby 8 months old, and a 10-year-old girl, were thrown clear as the car toppled over the bank. Mr. Eaton, however, was not so fortunate. He was thrown down the slope as the car rolled for the second time and was then pinned underneath it.
Help was immediately forthcoming, and when Mr. Eaton was extricated he was found to have sustained severe injuries to his body and head. Mrs. Eaton had her right arm injured and an ankle sprained, while Mr. and Mis. Coleman each escaped with an injured hand. The two children were shaken, but unhurt. Dr. Baxter attended to the injured, and Mr. Eaton was then conveyed to the Auckland Hospital. The others were able to proceed to their homes. The motor-car was badly damaged.
