BOXING.

PROFESSIONAL CONTEST. ! VOLAIRE DEFEATS MAY. mTERESTSNQ AMATEUR BOOTS. Tire boxing' carnival promoted by the Northern Boxing Association in aid of the Purdy Olympic fund attracted a large gathering to the Town Hall last evening, the attendance being estimated at about 2000. The chief bvent was a professional contest of 15 rounds between Eugene voiaire. the noted French light-weight, and Harry May, professional welter-wfeight champion of New Zealand. Both men entered the. ring in perfect condition. May's weight being announced as lOst. lib., and Volaires as iOst. 2ib. # , ~ . Before the contest it' was announced that the contestants Bad donaied £** each out ■of the ptuae to the Puray Olympic iund. In the early rounds, Wane toroea the pace, and his deliveries Were heavier than those of his opponent. The contest was mure even toward the end. but Voiaire always had rather the 'obtter of matters. He entered the last round with, a good lead on points, which he increased b'oiore the bout terminated. May boxed very gamely, and tried frequently to land a convincing punch with his right. He got home with it once, and shook his opponent, but the *xtaon boxer was too wily to leave himself open for another.

The Contest in Detail. - Voiaire began quickly, landing with a left hook to the head. May lead & right and eluded another left hook. The pair then got together, and Volaire scored heavily with both hands to the body. Left loads to the face were exchanged, but Volaire a was the heavier, and his left and right to the body were good punches. Early in the second round, Voiaire scoifcd a. left hook to the face, but May was on the retreat. May sent his right over to the neck. Then Voiaire hooked a left to tbte body that appeared to land rather low. May doubled up, but the pair boxed on.' Voiaire confined most of his attentions to the body in the third round, and scored heavily at closte quarters. May tried several times to connect with his right, but failed. A couple of straight lefts went to May's credit. Early in the fourth, Volaire landed a light straight left, but missed with a couple of left hooks and a right swing. May scored with a coupto of heavy rights to the jaw, and Voiaire rushed to close Quarters just as the round ended. Left hooks to the body and bead went to Volaire's credit at the opening of .the fifth round. May retaliated with straight lefts to the face, but failed to connect with his right. May also scored well to the body when in close. Thte pair got together early in the sixth round, Voiaire scoring a good left hook to the body. Breaking from a clinch, both just failed to connect with heavy rights to the head. It was the quietest round up to that stage. A coupto of lefts to the head were scored by Voiaire early in _ the seventh session, and May got home with a left hook to the i jaw. Toward the end both tried hard to land _ right and left swings to the head, but just missed. Th*ore was a good deal of clinching in the eighth, the best blow being a left hook to the body by Voiaire. May again tried to land his right but failed. May did rather better in the ninth round, scoring well with toft and right to the head, and doing good work at close Quarters. In the following session, Volaire opened with hea-ry left hooks to the body. and May got home with a good left to the face. A left hook to the head was taken by May on the retreat. He missed with left and right swings, but got home with a straight toft. t The eleventh was a quiet round. May missing; with left hooks and right swings, and Volaire scored with left hooks to the body. Early in the twelfth May scored with a good left hook, and brought thfc right over to the neck. In close work neither were effective, but Voiaire scored at long range w-th a left hook to the hfcad and right to the body. May stabbed in a good left toward the finish of the round Volaire, with left to tho body and hook up to the head, scored well in the opening of «he ]3'h round. May missing with his right to the head. In a mix-up Volaire failed "/ith his favourite left hook May got home with » good left to the jaw. Left exchanges marked the opening of the Mfh. May tried with a right swing and missed, and took a left from Volaire on the retreat. A straight left from Voiaire got home, and May clinched till the gong went. The concluding round was well contested, but Voiaire was obviously the fresher. Tho war mixed mutters toward the finish, and Volaire dropped May with a snappy right to the head just as the gong went. Mr, F. Burns was referee.

Preliminary Boats. Before the chief event took place an exhibition spar of four rounds was pivon by C. Puxdy, New Zealand's Olympic representative, and J. Keenan. of Auckland. The exb'bition shewed Purdy at hi? best, his work, both, in attack and defence, being clever and crisp, Jieenan. though not at his beat, owing to a recent attack of influenza, showed something of his old form, though Purdy was very elusive. # -A number of bouts between prominent Auckland amateur boxers were also con- ! tested. Bantam-weight Contest. Taylor (8.3) v. Peeke (8.1). -The contest opened with a rush by Feeke, but Taylor, boxing very coolly, met him with a, straight left. Fecke continued rushing tactics, but .Taylor proved too finished a boxer for him, and dealt out severe punishment. Toward (the end of the first round: Taylor had Feeke down, and mubsequently had him in a bad »ay. The referee stopped the contest and gave the verdict to Taylor.

Feather-weight Contests. Williams (9.0) v. Schlnsinger (B.B).—Both lads started at & fast clip, and thero were many good exchanges Williams' blows, particularly with his left, were better directed than those of his opponent. Schleainger took considerable punishment. sand the referee stopped the bout in the second round and declared Williams the winner. Elliott (9.0) v. McLaren (9.1).—-The first round opened at hurricane pace, McLaren rushing his opponent round the ring and swinging lefts and rights continually. Elliott fought back in great style, and, surviving the first onslaught, used, his left to advantage. * McLaren continued the aggressor in the second round, but many of his swinga failed to land. A left swing to the head floored Elliott, but he was up immodiatSly, fighting back with both hands. The concluding round saw McLaren trying to land a convincing blow, but Elliott's defence proved effective. McLaren received the award. Welter-weight Contest. Buckley (10.11) v. M*cCorrnack (10.13).— Both were' content to box at long range, and were generally content to use the left and get away. The second cession opened more briskly, Buckley rushing his opponent, but tho aggression was short-lived, the pair reverting to their previous tactics. An exhortatioa from the referee to liven up in the third round induced the boxers to mix matters a- little. Buckley did the better wot*, and received tho verdict. It is only fair to state that Buckley had injured his right hand and was unable to use it in the contest Messrs. G. G-illeit and G. Bush officiated as judges, and Mr. M. There was o. packed house to-night to see the 15-round boxinjj contest between Tommy Fairhall and Havilah Dren, but contrary to expectation the fight was tame, with neither man boxing up to reputation. Uren won on points. In the six-round heavy-weight contest, £~ Mcßne (Wellington) knocked out W. i>**«. (Auckland) in the fourth round.
