ESCAPE FROM ROTO ROA.

NOT WANTED IN INSTITUTION.

An inmate of Bote- Roa Inebriates' Heme, George Neville Carlsen (Mr. Waddingham), appeared before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday charged with having escaped from the institution. Senior-Sergeant Rawle said that accused had been committed on his own application. He escaped from the island on March 17 by means of a boat. When arrested on Monday he said he would not return, and preferred to go to gaoL Mr. Waddingham, in outlining the history of the case, attributed accused's conduct to his nervous condition. The man did not want to go to gaol. It was suggested he should be given another chance to overcome his weakness, and be allowed to return to Sydney, where he had relatives. _ _ _ _ The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said that accused had been sent to the island on his own application. He was subsequently released on license, and did fairly well for a time, but then started drinking again, and his license had to be cancelled. The senior-sergeant informed the Court that Carlsen was only returned to the institution on March 16, and escaped the following day. The senior-sergeant suggested that the man's condition was due to drink. The Salvation Army authorities did not want him back again. Carlsen was remanded for. a week.'

A SAILOR'S LANGUAGE. A fine of £10, in default one month's imprisonment, was imposed on George Gunn, aged 53, a member of the crew of a schooner, for having used obscene language in Little Queen Street -while drunk. THEFT CHARGES REMANDED. Charges of having stolen four tins of white lead and two tins of white zino, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and various articles of a total value of £? Is 3d, the property of some person unknown, were preferred against Harry Barron Thomas, aged 54 (Mr. Sullivan). Accused was remanded until to-morrow, bail being allowed on his own bond of £100 and one surety of £25. A youth aged 18, Nelson French, was remanded to appear at Te Aroha next Tuesday on a charge of having stolen a motor-cvele valued at £16, the offence being alleged to have been committed at Te Aroha on February 24.

In the report of a case heard at the Magistrate's Court last Friday, when R. J. Caltaux, storekeeper, of Whenuapai (Mr. Singer), was charged on private information with having assaulted Theophilus Wake, farmo.' (Mr. Tong), it was stated that the informant under crossexamination admitted he had been hound over to keep the peace toward several men in connection with this occurrence.' What the informant did admit was that he had been bound over to keep the peace toward two men in connection with an episode about 18 months ago. The information was dismissed.
