CIVIC SQUARE SCHEME.
WIDE INTEREST AROUSED. DEMOLITION ON" SITE. The Auckland City Council is steadily dcyeloping its scheme for tho proposed civic square in the heart of the city. The demolition of the old buildings on tho Queen Street front is proceeding, although somewhat delayed by the wet weather. A commencement will be made on Monday to demolish the shops on the Wellcslcy Street West frontage, the tenants having been given due notice. The competition which tho council had promoted for the treatment of the area was creating very wide interest throughout the Dominion, stated the Mayor, Mr. J. 11. Gunson, yesterday. The indications were that there would be a largo number of competitors. The development of the s.cheme would occupy some time, and it would probably be the end of the year or the beginning of 1925 before the council would bo ready to submit financial proposals, embodying tho winning design, to the ratepayers.
