ABOLISHING COLLECTIONS. A', and N.Z. LONDON, April i. A proposal to abolish church collections and to adopt a system of assessing ; each churchgoer at a yearly contribution led to a lively discussion at a conference on church finance held at Westminster. Canon Turner protested at 6d being regarded as an offering to God when it was spent to provide -the vicar's coal or gas. ; V ' The Rev. Fry, of Oxford, said the chief problem was the comfortable middleclass person, who prided himself on, sending » guinea to church funds, yet paid five guineas „ for a golf club fee, to say nothing of half-a-crown s for each game and a whisky and soda at the end. Canon Elliott assailed r raffles * and church bazaars. He said he had seen one programme which said, "-If you do * not speculate you will never accumulate."
