TREATMENT BY AUSTRALIA. '.DISCUSSION. I}<~ COMMONS. I Eeut«r. LONDON. April 4. In the House of Commons. Mr. P.. J. Hannon, member for Mo6eley (Birmingham), put a question ruggesting that recent applications made to the Australian Government for preferential treatment of British manufacturers under the Australian Industries Preservation Act, have been subject to delay, owing to the fact that articles involved were not included in the schedule of safeguarded industries under the Act. He > asked whaE policy the British Government intended to adopt in order to secure for British industry its full measure of preference in Australia. Mr. Sidney Webb, president of the Board of Trade, replied that be was not aware delays had occurred for the reasons stated. To grant preference in Australia was a matter for the Commonwealth Government. Mr. Hannon asked if Mr. Webb was aware that hundreds of work people were walking the streets of Britain v unemployed because this preference was < not .- recognised. . Mr. Webb said the information at his disposal did not confirm this. Mr. Wm. R. Pringle, Liberal member for York, asked if ' Mr. Webb was not aware that many people had lost their employment because the Australian Government refused to give an order to 1 British manufacturers at a lower price than their own people had tendered. At this stage the Speaker intervened.
