FALLEN IDOLS.
The: severe strictures recently passed upon the behaviour of American.' girls by leading educationalists are, according to Mr. lan.'Hay Beith, the novelist, whr has just arrived in New York, ejjuall,' applicable to British girls.
Voicing some reflections on "the tremendous revolution in the manners of women in England since the war, "lan Hay," as he signs his stories, informs Americans that for Englishmen, "the happiness that life ; used to hold " has been greatly reduced :by the privileges which women have arrogated to themselves. ' He- remarks that "the girls of London drink cocktails just as New York girls did when I last was hire, and, as I am informed, Ihey still, do. In the old days: • music'halls and* clubs? Aeere restricted to -men. Not so 10-day. One result -is a sensible diminution: in the old- / fashioned ■; reverence 6f men"' for women that'was the most sacred thing in life." : Mr. Beith adds that there have been some signs recently of a slight improvement in the moral standard of young Englishwomen, who are beginning to, realise that wild life does not pay. .Thedepreciated funds of the average Englishman are partly responsible for this improvements; He proposes that, to restore women to the old pedestal of respect, '■'", men in the United' States and Britain shall enter into a solemn covenant "to; refuse to >; give any > girl more than one cocktail, on any occasion," and to "cease taking .them to clubs "or music halls where liquor is served." ~
