TAKAPUNA AFFAIRS.
NEW GRADES FOR ROADS. Th<» Takapuna Borough Council' met last evening. There were present the Mayer, Mr. A. M. Gould, Messrs. J. Collins, F. E. N. Gaudin, J. W. Hayden P. W, Suckling, M. E. Thompson, and E. G. Tucker. Plans and specifications were submitted by the borough engineer for the proposed! section of road work between Belmont and Clifton. The plan for the grade of the road between Belmont and the Devouport boundary was also submitted. After discussion, consideration of the plans was adjourned until next meeting. In the meantime the engineer is to con* fer with the Tramway Company's officials as to the levels in King Edward Avenue. A request by a deputation from th« Takapuna Women's Progressive League for a grant in aid of the maintenance of the district nurse, was met by the council recommending the Finance Committee to .place a vote of 15 guineas on the estimates for the incoming financial year. The Milford Ratepayers' Association wrote suggesting that trees be planted at the seaward end of the roads which end at the beaches, and also proposing the creation of & brick area for building purposes. Both matters were referred to committees.
The Bayswater-Belmont Progressive Association wrote complaining of the persistent smoke nuisance caused by the locomotives of the Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Company; and also complaining of the company's want of • regularity in observing the ferry time-table. Both questions were referred ito the borough solicitor, with instructions to take legal steps to procure an abatement of the nuisance, and to advise the council as to how the penalty clauses in the - Tramway Company's deed of delegation could be enforced. Another letter from the same association forwarded a request by the Bayswater Women's Progressive Association for the provision of a playing area in that district, and suggesting that it could be provided by comparatively inexpensive reclamation in Shoal Bay. It was resolved to reply that while the council sympathised with the proposal, it could do nothing at present. Eleven new building permits were granted, representing a proposed outlay of £5983.
