WHANGAREI AFFAIRS.
BOROUGH BY-ELECTION. [BY TELEGRAPH. own" correspondent.] WHANGAREI, Wednesday. As an outcome of the resignation recently of Mr. S. Clayton Thorns, as a member of the Whangarei Borough' Council, a by-election took place to-day to fill the vacancy. William Lees, a local building contractor, was elected by a majority of 32 votes. Although defeated at the main booth and at Horahora he defeated his opponent, Mr. A. M. Bust, at the Mairtown end, by 64 votes. General appreciation has been expressed at the excellence of the exhibits at the Whangarej Art • Society's - Exhibition in tho county chambers.
