FIRE ENGINE AND TAXIS.
COLLISION AT NEWMARKET. TWO CARS DAMAGED. An accident to the Parnell fir© engine, fortunately not resulting in any casualties, occurred at the north end of Broadway, Newmarket, at about 12.15 p.m. yesterday. The Remuera and Parnell Fire Brigade responded to. a call to Omahu Road, and, as the Parnell engine approached the intersection of Khyber Pass and Broadway, a motor-bus carrying passengers to St. Heliers, came round from Khyber Pass past the taxi-stand at the corner. It is stated that the driver of the bus hesitated on seeing the approaching fire engine, and his engine stalled, leaving the vehicle standing across the tramlines. At this point the road is being repaired, leaving a (considerably narrower track than usual. The driver of the fire engine, to avert a serious accident, tried to steer between the stationary bus and the rank of standing taxis, but the speed was too great, and the engine crashed into two of the taxis. Both vehicles, which were owned by Messrs. Neilsen and C. Crisp, respectively, were considerably damaged, and were later towed to a garage for repairs. The fire engine was able to return to the station under its own power, it being only slightly damaged. The call proved to be a false alarm.
