HEROISM OF THE PEN. NATIONAL " TRIBUTE PAID. Times. BRUSSELS, Dee. 17. A unique tribute was paid to Belgian journalism when citizens of all classes assembled in large. numbers to do honour to the clandestine press which carried on publication under the German occupation during the Great War. Members of the Cabinet paid a tribute to those journalists who laid down their pens rather than consent 10 submit their work to the enemy censorship. Statistics show that during the German occupation nearly 250 clandestine newspapers were published in Belgium, despite daily searches by the German police. . Newspapers appeared in the majority of towns and helped to sustain the morale of the population. Publication, however, led to the infliction of numerous sentences, and many workers on these papers died in prisons and some were shot.
