GfRL'S r DESIRE TOR RINGS. ~[bt TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] v WELLINGTON. Saturday. .'A, desire for " jewellery, ' whether obtained honestly or otherwise, was fostered by a 14-year-old girl to such an extent that to-day she made her appearance before Mr. C,. R. Orr Walker, S.M., at the Juvenile Offender's Court, on a charge yof stealing two diamond rings, valued at £45. The girl also had to answer to two further charges of theft from other per-* sons, of two diamond cluster rings, valued at-£7 7s, and £12 respectively. " Chief-Detective Kemp said that the girl ; had stolen the first two rings from a shop, and had disposed of them to a second-hand dealer who, when . interviewed by detectives, gave a false description of the girl. Six days later she went to another shop and asked to see some rinpjs. She secured one ring from the tray, and took it to another second-hand dealer.:. She also asked her third victim ' to show her some rings. This was done, but, seizing ;an opportune moment, the defendant exchanged one of the rings previously stolen for one of greater -value and endeavouring to dispose of it elsewhere. She ,was later arrested, and admitted the offences. All the rings had subsequently been recovered, together with £7 18s of the money paid by the second hand dealers. v; The magistrate admitted the accused to probation for 12 months, and suggested that the actions of the second-hand dealers • should be, the subject of a further in- . quiry.
