NO CHEAP FARES.
THE EMPIRE EXHIBITION. [BX TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. To obtain cheaper fares for New Zealanders who wish to visit„the British Empire Exhibition next year has been the object of the Canterbury District Committee. Its efforts have not achieved any success, but the committee had not given up hope until to-day, when it was told by the secretary of the Dominion Advisory Council that the latest cablegram received stated there would be no reduction at all. Mr.' L. J. Schmidt: Is there any hope at all of lower' fares? I have had inquiries from people who would make the trip if passages were cheaper. . • Mr. G. Scdtt: Many people have now given up all hope of going. / Mr. A. F. Roberts, commissioner of the New Zealand Court, said that he did not know much about that aspect, but he did know that the appeals had fallen on rather deaf ears. However, he believed, even if- later on passage rates were reduced, that all the vessels would be full before those who waited to take advantage of the concession could book their berths. ' , ' .>
