OUTBREAKS OF FIRE.
NORTHERN CO.'S STEAMER. LITTLE DAMAGE DONE. A fire broke out on boaijd the Northern
Company'*: steamer Ngatiawa on Friday night, when the vessel was at sea, en route from Houhora to Auckland. The outbreak was in the pantry, and was caused by an electric light wire fusing. The fire was subdued with 'the aid of the ship's hose before much damage had been done. , THREE CALLS IN THE CITY. KEROSENE AND NAKED LIGHT. A fire occurred at a dwelling house, owned and occupied by Mr. S. Stewart, at 67, Franklin Road, at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday. Kerosene had been spilt on some boards, and a naked light coming into contact with the oil-sodden woodwork resulted in a small outbreak. The City and Western District Brigades each sent a motor-engine, and the fire was extinguished -with a few -buckets of water. The house was insured for £550 and the contents for £100, both policies being with the South British Insurance Company, Ltd. The City Fire Brigade was called at 10.4 a.m. yesterday to the corner of Queen Street and Wakefield Street, where an electric cable had fused under the pavement. The Power Board was informed, and power was cut off, pending a man being sent to deal with the trouble. Two city firemen were sent to a grass fire in Emily Place at 1.25 p.m. on Saturday. The fire was not serious, and was soon extinguished. A grass fire was responsible for the Mount Albert brigade receiving a call about L3O p.m. on Saturday to Taylor's Road, Momingside. The flames were en-.] dangering some houses, but were extinguished before any damage was done.
