WELLINGTON YOUTH'S LAPSE.] THEFT FROM EMPLOYER. [BY TBLEOEAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.! WELLINGTON. Monday. A mani* for dancing and a penchant for the too extensive entertainment of his female acquaintances, were described as the cause.') contributing to the downfall of a youth named Cyril Sydney John Poulton, who pleaded guilty, in the Magistrate's Court to-day to the theft of a suit of clothes, valued at £7 7s, and I various sums amounting to £12 ss.
.;'* Chief-Detective Kemp said that the offences had been committed while accused was in the employ of a Wellington tailoring firm. His duties were to attend at the counter and receive deposit* on orders for suits. By the manipulation of carbon sheets he succeeded in relieving the firm of £12 ss, and helped himself also to a new suit of clothes. "He later wrote to his employer," added the chief-detective, "and stated that he wa* short in his cash and intended to do away with himself. His downfall has been attributed to his being too fond of entertaining ladies." Mr. Meltzer. who represented accused, said that this was one of those extraordinary cases of a young man who had been brought up in the best surroundings possible. His parents were highly able residents of Christchurch. The boy's trouble was due to the mania he had developed for attending dance saloons and entertaining young women. He was a splendid worker, bit he was somewhat weak, and allowed himself to be turned aside by that craving. Restitution would be "made forthwith, added counsel, in asking the Bench to give accused another The magistrate, Mr. C. R. Orr-Walker, admitted accused to probation \ for 12 months, a special condition being that restitution be made forthwith. . An application for the suppression of his name was refused.
