NOTES FROM' THE . SOUTH. HORSES FOR AUCKLAND. [BY. TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday. Eiccarton stables are well represented in the nominations for the principal events at the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting but only a small proportion of the horses will make the trip nor th. Glentruin ha* resumed work after a short rest since the recent meeting.. She was moving rather stiffly one morning last week, and probuhly was siuffering from slight kidney trouble. Her stable-mate Ballymena' and Murihaupo are having an easy time, at present; but they will soon be doing faster work again. These three horses are booked for Auckland. ■ . Ardour was given a week's rest following on her recent racing, but she ihas made her reappearance oh the tracks looking bright and well. ~,..,. Deucalion has developed trouble, in one of his legs, and he had to forfeit his South Canterbury engagement. He looks an if he would have to be spelled. Falstaff cut himself on one of his lego while schooling this week. He could nor be raced at the South Canterbury meeting- but the trouble is not serious. Jazz has left R. Emerson's stable, having been sold to one of W. Holmes patrons. He will probably be raced at the holiday meetings on the West Coast. Mr. G. L. Rutherford's English purchase. Last' Dart, by Spearmint from Ultima, arrived at Lyttelton recently, and is now an inmate of R. Emerson's stable. He is small, but a neat looking colt. The Australian-bred 'two-year-oKdj TreaIham. is having a spell. He will not race again for a few months, but his form at Riccarton suggests that he will do well in the best company in the autumn. Winkie's Best is moving along nicely in his work. He will have his first race at Methven. and later on he should be worth following. Gloaming is now being ridden on the tracks. He- has already done a,lot of useful pacing while being exercised- on the lead, and if all goes 'well he should be in good order for sprint races in the autumn. He is engaged in the Middle Park Plate, which will be - an easy . race for him 10 win. if he is nearly at his best, as he will have no penalty. Red Kriss is the latest jumping recruit at Riccirton. He shapes, well. W. Hobba is not doing much with his team at present; but Paleßtrina. Wink and Jubilant will be got ready to rac6 at the D 'nedin C -istmas meeting. The two English fillies which Hobbs has in work for"* Mr. J. B. Reid are getting: through plenty of useful exercise There was.' some very inconsistent running at the South Canterbury meetinsr. Several horses who failed badly on the first day showed greatly improved form on the second day. This is always liable to happen, but a noticeable feature was that the improvement was usually foreshadowed by the totalisator figures. "Solferino's progeny continue to race well at every meeting in these parts. Knoeklyn Solferite and Warhue won for him ;,t South Canterbury on Friday, while 'on Saturday Mantua and All British added to the record. The Southland-owned horse Baldowa. the "winner of the Teschemaker Handicap. the chief event of the South Canterbury meeting, is a very useful, customer. He appeared to be beaten half a. mile from homo, ■ but. he raced on very gamely, and he won decisively. ;.. He < had ' shown [ at the > Dunedin mcating in October that he could 'sprint, and new he is proved over a mile and a

Integrity is a smart . beginner, ana ,this will help her to further successes in 'short races. . .\> ' ... ~ . ..„_ „ Humboldt made a creditable start as a hurdler at South Canterbury ;on Friday 'when he was narrowly beaten by Like ihood. If he were sound Humboldt would pay his way among the jumpers, but he looks as if he might not last long. , . Lord Nagar' showed wonderful improvement in the Second Hurdles Race at South Canterbury compared with his first dajr s form The totalisator showed that the public was prepared for the improvement on the eecond day. ~ , ~ Royal Wink, the three-year-old halfbrother to Royal Star was well backed each day at South Canterbury, but failed to realise expectations. It looks as a* he was not quite so good as his admirers thought. He may improve, but apparently he does not stay, too well yet. .. Warhue, a winner at Ricoarton scored again at South Canterbury on Friday. He began slowly, but he finished with a great run. The Solferino— gelding is an improving sort, who will do still better later on if he keeps sound. Solferite showed a lot of speed when he won the Maiden Plate at South Canterbury, but he is no more than a moderate at present, as he was well beaten next day. Sprinkler, the three-year-old brother to Pilliowinkio. won like a good horse on the first day of the South Canterbury meeting. He is on the improve and he will be seen before long in much better company, and as a winner, too. if all goes well. ... Viewpoint showed useful form as a, two-year-old ' last autumn, but ihe shaped disappointingly in his early efforts this season. At the South Canterbury meeting on Friday he ran a good race behind Sprinkler, and he was sent out favourite in a mile race next day.. Decently handled he woult. have won instead of being beaten bj about a head. ■ He ran very wide at the turn, and was catching All British very fast at the finish. There was a fine set to in the flying Handicap on the fir-it day of the South ■ Canterbury meeting. Economist had a neck advantage a hundred yards from the post, but C. Emerson showed to more advantage than McCarten in the dosing stages and got Lovcsign up to make a deadjheat.. . Mantua ran just a fair race in the Teschemaker Handicap at South Canterbury, but next day over a mile she was maf.) favourite and she duly won. Her performance was full of merit as she got off badly and bid to make up ground round the turn. She its a good little mare, who looks better than at any previous stage of her career. , . _ ~ Some Kid ran two good races at South Canterbury, being second each day in the Welter Handicaps. He looks as if he was coming back to his best form. Kilfane won the Stewards' Welter Handicap on the second day at South Canterbury, but only by a narrow margin, and he appeared to be -a trifle lucky. Goldspinner broke a long run of failures when he won the Trial Handicap at South Canterbury. He has a great private imputation, but foe has repeatedly failed to reproduce it in a race. In this respect he differs greatly from his . r«lative Lovesign who is very solid in public. There was an unfortunate incident on the second day at South Canterbury. Miss Minerva won the Claremont Hack Handicap very easily, but her rider weighed in without his breastplate. None of the officials appear to have noticed the omission and when their attention was drawn to it the totalisator staff had started paying out. Miss Minerva was disqualified, but dividends were paid on the horaea as they finished. The dismounting steward appeared to be to blame in foiling to note the omission.

WELLINGTON. THE ASHURST MEETING. [BY. TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT J WELLINGTON" Saturday. A considerable number of Wellington visitors were present at the Ashurst meeting this week. The meeting is very popular and always seems to be run on lines calculated to induce people to remember it with pleasure. ■-' , The Otaki gelding. Bonecto. was produced in the hurdle race at Ashurst, and for a new hand "at the business ran a great race. He had been jumping. well at home, but only his immediate connections supported him. and ho was paying a great price, to win. As it was he paid well for running second. It is quite likely he will turn out a useful hurdler when he is more seasoned. Mountain Tod was heavily backed in the Maiden Plate at , Ashurst, but the chestnut maro was one of the last to leave the mark and she had 'no chance from the start. The Wellington-owned Alabama did a good gallop shortly before leaving for Ashurst. and the Open was looked on by some as a "rood thing for him. In his preliminary, however, he went down very badly. He was slow finding his feet in the race, and was soon one of the tail of the field. It transpired that he has ir.«t recovered from an injury received a while ago, and that he will need to be rested for some time. , There was a lot of money for Still Sea at Ashurst. and it is understood that most of the support came from the right quarter. The Absurd gelding showed a lot of pace and piloted the field into the straight, but in the run home he died and finished well back. The race ought to do him good, and with' a bit of improvement ho will win a race. . ■ , . , Happy Days is. still doing good track work at Otaki. but he is not having much luck in his races. He was unlucky on the first day at Pabiatua. and at Ashurst a week later he was travelling very fast the finish after getting away badly. . . Radiac is another Otaki horse that is improving. His showings at Pahiatua and Ashurst entitle him to consideration. for events ahead. ... , „ . . The owner of Arrowsmith is talking of putting the imported horse into work again shortly with a view to his contesting classic £v>T}tß Blackhead was Roing so well at one stage 3hvckhead was going so well at one stage of the Komako Handicap at the Ashurst meeting- that it looked as if he might run into a place. He did not manage the turn well, however, and was out of a place at the finish. He was paying over a quarter of a century to win. . Reno Mavis and Prmtemps may be expected to run well at the Feilding meeting if they are taken through, and it is the present intention of the trainer to make the The Feilding Stakeß which is to be run this week should be a great race. It is reported here that the Auckland horseman. J. O'Shea, will have the mount on Rational If this is the case the Hawera horse should have every chance. ■ The best was not seen of Eonmark at Ashurst, and he may go better at Feilding. He was kept a long time at the barrier at Ashurst. and must have taken a- lot out of himself as he failed to finish on like he did at Trentham. Hytinus is one of -the best hacks down this way. and ,he will win again shortly. Helen Rufus only needs a first-class horseman lii the saddle to be hard to beat in races up to, a mile.
