STATE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

READJUSTMENT APPROVED.

NO CHANGE THIS CHRISTMAS

The matter of readjustment of the dates of the primary school vacations in 1924 was again considered ?by the Education Board yesterday, when ''a ■'■; letter was / received from the Primary Schools Association expressing s approval of the, dates re- ; cently suggested by the ; department. :These provide ,■ for \ two weeks' holiday in May, two in August, and seven weeks at the end of the \ year, the dates' being % from May 10 to May 25, August 25 to September 8," and 1 December 20 to February 8. ; This makes a total of about two weeks' extra holiday in the year; -~"■* 1 -'■- ' 1 't Mr. A. "Bums said he was :in favour of I three terms in the year, but not of anv ; extension of the present holidays, which | simply meant that the children would bo roamu'g the' streets. : Oh the other ; hand, j many/ parents : wanted their children to complete their ; education as soon as posI sible, so that th<-y might go to work. The chairman, Mr. E. C. Banks, fetated that when the matter was considered by the Council of Education he had voiced this objection to the proposal', with regard to two weeks' holiday in May. From a country point of view, the? May holiday was no good at all; May was the best month for" school attendance, and it would be much better if the holidays could be fixed for June, when the days were short and the weather usually bad..' This would -make rather a long first term, but wo"ld be betU o far as the education of the children was concerned. ■ On the motion of Mr. H. S. W. King, it was decided that the board inform the department that it was' willing to support the new proposals, but that it; would adhere to the arrangements already made with/regard to the opening of schools after the forthcoming Christmas holidays, .the. date for which had been fixed,, for 'February 4. '\ _ ' ' .;' Mr. A. Burns opposed the motion, his objection being recorded. ■;• / >-■-"•■,
