SHIPPING AT AUCKLAND.
LAST MONTH'S ACTIVITIES.
BERTHING FACILITIES TAXED.
A report on the Auckland shipping movements for October was submitted to the Harbour Board jesterday by the harbourmaster, Captain H. H. Sergeant. The arrivals consisted of one British warship, two Royal Mail steamers, 21 large cargo steamers, 15 intercolonial or island traders, 25 coastal steamers, and 1 intercolonial sailing vessel, with 608 local coastal vessels, a grand total of 673 vessels, of 327,232 gross tons and 191,077 net tons. Compared with the corresponding period for last year the large snipping showed an increase of four vessels, of 11,122 gross tons and 3981 net tons. Local coastal vessels showed an increase of 147 vessels of 17,231 gross tons and 7314 net tons. During the month the berthage accommodation had been taxed to its utmost capacity on several occasions, and on two of these occasions steamers had to wait in the stream for half a day and two days respectively before berths were available. Prince's Wharf could not be completed too soon for the port's requirements. Tlk> departures consisted of two British warships, two Royal Mail steamers, 20 oversea steamers, 12 intercolonial or island traders, 30 coastal steamers, and one intercolonial sailing vessel, with 597 local coastal vessels, a grand total of 664 vessels of 309,006 gross tons and 187,380 not tons.
