L. Absolum. at Gleeeon's Buildings^ • NOTES BY PICADOR. The Dunedin sportsman, Mr. J. TrengTOve, has every reason to be jubilant over his* purchase of the pacers Great Hope and Alto Chimes in September. The termor, who was making his first appearance in his new owner's colours, accounted for the New Zealand Trotting Cup yesterday, and as j the winner's portion of the stake amounted to £1500. Mr. Trengrove got ft return of nearly the whole of his outlay. The New Zealand Trotting Cup winner Great Hope is a five-year-old chestnut horse, by Great Audubon out of Sadie Dillon, and was bred by tho late R. A. McMillan. He did not race at two-years-old, but ; opened his career auspiciously as a three-year-old by winning the Great Northern Trotting Derby in handsome style. Subsequent to that event, he was purchased by Mr, J.R. Corrigan for 1000 guineas, and was handed over to J. Bryce to train. His next outing was in the Washdyke Handicap at Timaru, in which he ran unplaced, but this was followed with a victory in the Champion Stakes at Addington, and another win in the New Zealand Derby, Stakes at New Brighton. He opened his four-year-old career with a victory in the Selwyn Handicap at the August meeting at Addington, ■and in four more starts during the season, finished third in the Auckland Trotting Cup. second in the Summer Cup, unplaced in the Tamaki Handicap, all at the Auckland Summer Meeting, and third in tho Craven Handicap at Addington. After the last-named event he did not race again until this season, which he began with two unplaced performance.-, and a ishird in the National Cup, all at Addington in August. In Seplember he was purchased, together with Alto Chimes, by Mr. J. Trengrove, but remained in J. Bryce's charge, and has now joined the select band of New Zealand Trotting Cup winners. Groat Hope has now £3675 in stakes and a silver cup. • Great Hope is the second New Zealand Trotting Cup winner trained by J. Bryce, who previously won the event with Cathedral Chimes in 191 G. . The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Spring Meeting is" at present engaging tho attention of trotting enthusiasts throughout the Dominion, but tho declaraion of tho handicaps for tho Otahuhu Trotting Club's Spring Meeting were wolcomed by local devotees of the light harness sport. "With the 'opening of the Otahuhu Trotting Club's Spring Meeting now only 10 days distant, .local trainers are keeping their charges moving, and each morning thore is plenty doing at Aloxandra. Park. . Holly Boy, who left a favourable impression when he accounted for the Junction Handicap at the Auckland Spring Meeting, is being indulged in plenty of sound work by trainer S. August, and he appears to be thriving, on it. The American-bred mare Bonnie Jean* A has joined P. Riddle's team, and is now one of that trainer's active brigado at Alexandra Park. , > _.■;■ A.
