UNPROVOKED ASSAULT.
THREE YOUNG MEN IMPRISONED.
A number of offenders were dealt with I at the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. i J. W. Poynton, S.M. Cyril Joseph Trainer, aged 21, James j Reginald Purdy, aged 22, and William \ Sommerville, aged 22, who pleaded not guilty on Monday, when charged with having assaudted Percy Hector Roy, altered their plea to one of guilty when j they reappeared in the Court yesterday. | Senior-Sergeant Rawle said the assault j was quite unprovoked. Both Purdy anu ] Sotnmerville had a large list of previous convictions. " These men drank until they felt quarrelsome, and then went out of the bar v.ith the intention of easing; their feelings by 'stoushing' the first likely victim, said the senior-sergeant. Sonvnerville and Purdy were sentenced I to two months' and one month's imprison- | ment respectively, and Trainer, who was i a first offender, to 14 days. THEFT BY A DOMESTIC. A domestic, Olive Skidmore, aged 23, ! pleaded guilty to the theft, of a quantity. ; of clothing, valued at £5, the property of her employer. Senior-Detective Hammond ; said that the girl had packed up the | clothing with her own effects, but had not removed it from the house. Accused had ] previously borne an excellent character, : and he recommended that she should re- | ceive lenient treatment. 1 The magistrate accordingly convicted j accused and ordered her to report regu- : laxly to the probation, officer.
