DUST IN WELLINGTON.
PROTEST BY RESIDENTS. The urgent necessity for the Wellington Cjtv Council to take some action to alleviate the dust nuisance which exists in Thorndon Quay is emphasised by the residents of the locality, some 300 of whom have signed a petition which been presented to the Mayor, Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P. Some idea of the feelings of tho people affected may bo gauged from the descriptive sentences which accompanied several of the signatures, of which the following are a sample:—"Entrance to the Empire City—dust and filth"; "City fathers sleep and rust" ; "fresh air and —dust and death" "tightly closed doors and windows in preference to Health Week advice"; "worse than Sahara." The Mayor stated that the petition ■would be passed on for consideration by the Works Committee. Mr. Wright admitted, that the nuisance existed, but in view of the duplication of the tramway track and a possible alteration of its alignment it was not expedient to do anything of a permanent character to Thon.don Quay until after that work was completed, when the road would be treated with a bituminous surface.
