DEVONPORT TELEPHONES.

NEW AUTOMATIC SYSTEM. It is expected that the new automatic telephone system will be in operation at Devonport early in the coming year. The Telegraph Department's staff has commenced the trenching work along Victoria Road and. Claience Street . preparatory to connecting the manual exchange in Victoria Road with the new automatic exchange in Clarence Street. Some time ago the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce requested that additional public telephones be erected in the borough, and, while it is hoped that this request will be acceded to, the residents of Stanley Bay are moving in the direction of having a branch post office established at the corner of Calliope and Glen Roads. A block of shops is beina; built —the first business premises to be erected in that portion of Devonport Borough.
