MEN OUT OF WORK.
POSITION ON WEST COAST. f>Y TELFGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ; ' CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. Too much unskilled labour is at present offering on th« West Coast. The position was accentuated by the-stoppage of work at the coalmines and its adverse effect upon business generally. Business men are complaining about tho numerous demands made on their generosity by strangers, who are out of work. One shopkeeper, who is also a prominent public man. summed up general opinion when he said he did not object to keeping any man who was down on his luck , through no fault of his own, but he did object to putting bis hand in his pocket several times a day to supply "dead beats " with beer money. Inquiries ; made at the Greymouth Labour Bureau led to the confirmation of reports of the lack of employment for unskilled labourers. lam sorry to have to keep turning these fellows down, said the inspector, Mr. Tyson, " but there is no demand for their services."
