BENNO MOISEIWITSCH.
THE SECOND RECITAL.
The eminent Russian pianist Benno Moiseiwitsch again appeared at the Town Hall last evening in a programme which practically exhausted the possibilities of pianoforte playing. Such was the breadth and subtlety of his manifold renderings that the large and attentive audience was at times carried to the highest pitch of enthusiasm., Rapturous applause broke out after the playing of each special (number or. group, while at .the close era was a fervid demonstration, which brought the apparently, . tireless pianist back once more. ■ '• Moiseiwitsch • first renewed acquaintance with an Auckland audience in Bach's well-known "Prelude in C Major." after which he proceeded with a masterly interpretation of Beethoven's "Sonata in C Major," popularly known as the "Waldstein."; In the working-out of this justly famous work, not a lurking beauty escaped the pianist's notice. Schumann's monumental "Etudes Symphoniques," opus " ,13, in the form of 12 variations couched in different moods, were striking evidence of the pianist's ability to pro duce an almost inexhaustible variety of effects. A charming group .'oj !> seven Chopin pieces followed, special points of melodic interest being noted . in- the "Fantasie-Impromptn" in C sharp minor, the "Waltz" in 0 sharp minor, and the more passionate "Ballade in A Flat," which brought in ' its train two additional solos,; the: '.'Black Key" and the "Butterfly" Etudes. Moiseiwitsch invaded the realm ( of the moderns, in the attractive miniature "La "Fille :•'-'(' aux Cheveux de Lin" (Debussy) and the "Bird Song,", "Finnish Davee" and "E'arelian Dance " (Palmgren). Liszt's' skilful transcription of Schubert's "Hark! Hark the Lark!" and ■ Tausig's powerful arrangement of ' Schubert's "Marche Militairo" were the remaining ■ pieces oh a programme which must rank as one of the finest ever presented by a visiting artist.- *....
