The observation hut .on the East Cape lighthouse station was destroyed by fire at 8.30 this morning. The keepers, who live at the bottom of the hill, did «ot learn of the outbreak until a native 'i informed them, when the fire had practically burned out. *" ' '•'*'■ All. .the content© of the hut, including flags, telescopes, signal books, overcoaits and; the bedding of ; the keepers, were burned. . •' .- \w * ■■:- - . •-' A strong westerly gale drove the flam on to the iron tower, which became: rad hot with >the heat, and the mats -nißida caught fire. Fortunately all the windows in, the tower faced away from the Ramus, so that' the fire did ■ not enter the towtir.
