AWARD WAGES NOT PAID.
( IRONMONGER FINED £5. ; FEMALE ASSISTANT'S BATE. j: A breach of the Retail Shop Assistants' Award was alleged in a charge against T. Skeates, an ironmonger, in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. J. E. , Wilson, S.M. I)t/endanj was stated to have failed to pay a female assistant the award wages. -For the Labour Department, Mr. Hollows pressed for a heavy penalty. The em. ployee concerned was; entitled to receive £2 6a 6d a week, and, aa the bonuses were reduced, £2 4s and £2 2s 6d. Last May it was found that she was receiving only 255, and that arrears amounted to £34, After the department had written to Skeates, he paid the employee £6 6s, and asked her to get a permit as an underrate worker. She refused to do that, and left defendant's employ. Defendant said he had always treated his employee fairly. She bad not asked j for more money. _ , ;-■■■ j The magistrate imposed a penalty of £5.
