': ' \ SHOPS AND DWELLINGS. . Much activity in building is being shown in the marine suburbs. Five new chops have -just been completed on Vaux* hall Road, Devoriport,' and' several are already occupied. On all sides dwelling houses are being built in this attractive suburb, many parts of ■ which have the double advantage of being volcanic soil and also adjacent to the sea. . Permits for buildings aggregating £24,000 were issued during the past six months fit Birkenhead, where several shops art) in course of erection in the vicinity <Vf the Borough Council chambers. Just below the council office a _ two-storeyed brick shop and dwelling is being erected on' the site of the. Anglican Church, the latter having been recently removed to : the opposite side of the same street, a little lower down. A block of nine lock-up brick shops is in course of construction at Highbury Corner, on . the same side as the Foresters' Hall. The latter brick building has also been considerably enlarged with shop frontages to the main street. Several dwellings have recently been completed, and others are being erected. Building has been proceeding stead : at Northcote, being confined, however, to new residences and alterations. The value of buildings for which permits were issued totalled £22,000 during the past year. The allotment which remained vacant for many years at the corner of Queen and Alma Streets, near the wharf, recently changed hands, and two houses have since been erected thereon, one being occupied, and the other, a two-storeyed residence,* Hearing completion.
