INCREASE IN RECENT YEARS. *vi' .•'l*' '• ••• , \ i* *' )■' - (•' ? i■* V v " / RELATION TO HORSE VEHICLES. The statement made"" at a gathering of saddlers some , weeks ago, that in ; the United, Kingdom and the United States horse-drawn vehicles were replacing motor vehicles, " particularly in regard: to shortdistanco haulage, came in for some attention" at the annual social of the" Auckland branch 'of / the, Motor - Trade Association, last evening. Mr. H. O. Jones met this' statement with figures. showing the growth in the. use of motor" vehicles, compared with the • falling-off in the - use of horse-drawn , vehicles over a period , of 12 years. In 1910, he said, the ; horse-drawn vehicles made in New Zealand numbered 3524, and those imported 2152, or a total of 3756, while in the same year , only 772 motor vehicles were imported. In 1922, 1152 horse vehicles were made in the Dominion, and 67 imported, a . total of 1219. On the other hand, on an average taken oW the three years 1920-22; the motor velnsles ' imported into / the Dominion totalled 6595. The matter was again referred to later in the evening 'by Mr. H. L. Rogers, President of the New Zealand Wholesale Motor Trade Association,. who - said it had been/the custom for a number of years to take a tally of the traffic passing" over Putney Bridge, London, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on one day in the year. The record showed that, in 1905, /; the horse-drawn vehicles - passing over the bridge were 1276, and the motors nil, while in 1922. the motor /totalled 6900, and the horse-drawn vehicles nil. ' This latter . statement caused . a good deal of merriment, and Mr. - Rogers sdded that those who suggested that anyone , was discarding the motor in favour rof the horse were surely without the knowledge they should »: have*, ' <
