TRAMWAY TO NEWMARKET.
SUGGESTED CIRCULAR ROUTE COUNTER-PETITION PRESENTED: ■ The question :of an alteration to the tramway ; service as it. affects Newmarket ■was \ again before • the Borough Council last evening. , V At its ' previous meeting the council received a deputation in support of a petition containing 750 1 signatures of "residents and business people of New-■ market and surrounding districts,'' - ask- j ing the : council to request the City Council to provide a round-trip service, namely,' from Customs Street; through Parnell. to Newmarket, and back to - the city .via! Khyber Pass and Syxnonds Street' arid vice versa. The petition stated, that no constructional cost would 'be involved, as the necessary loop-line connecting the Parnell lino with Knyber Pass already existed/ It was 'contended that tho congestion; at the regular stopping place in Broadway would be relieved, and the danger, of accidents reduced, while the convenience of hundreds of people would be served. Last- evening a deputation representing another portion of . the ■ district, attended. ; Mr. David Teed, ' who acted as spokesman, contended that the previous petition had been presented by only a portion: of f.he shopkeepers of Newmarket. i; It J practically suggested that the main street iof »he bvjrough should be cut out of tramway benefits. He could see no good that would result from; compliance with ! the. petition-, ers' prayer.. The reference to congestion being relieved did not hold, as it was no. greater than that at any of the' tramway termini • It would be unfair ;to occupiers of shops further along the main > street if the circular route were adopted. V ! Mr. J. H. M. Carpenter suggested that the- present loop in Broadway be done away with and a safety zone established in its place. A loop or points-from which the cars could turn back • could; be made round the bend in Remuera Road. ■J The Mayor, Mr. : S. Donaldson, said the petition presented at the previous meeting asked for an entirely new service. It could scarcely, be argued that the borough would be ,deprived, for the service asked for did not exist. The matter was then discussed by the council in committee. s
