CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The open steeplechase at the South Canterbury ■ Hunt " Meeting to-day provided Omahu with an opportunity to show his quality. He was m the rear in the early stages, but after . the last six furlongs he was always forcing Manawapango along. The latter jumped brilliantly, gaining ground at each obstacle up to the last two, when Omahu had his measure. Omahu over-jumped at some of the fences, but it was the first time he had faced brush pince he won at Ellerslie, and the race should i benefit him. ■'-~, j Carmine, who is favoured for the Winter I Cup, won the chief flat race at the South ! Canterbury Hunt Club's Meeting in firstclass style. He wtis always well placed, and stayed too well for Fabrinade, over the last furlong. He must have a chance at Riccarton. Rhodoro, who won both the hunters' steeplechases at South Canterbury Meeting to-day. has a considerable local reputation, gained in point-to-point steeplechases, but he hid not competed previously at. a regular race meeting. . He looks like doing even better. He is a good jumper, and a rare stamp of a hunter. .-.,.,-; AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. NOMINATION OF OFFICERS. j Nominations for various offices under the Auckland Racing' Club, rendered vacant by effluxion of time, ! closed pn Saturday. Sir j Edwin -■ Mitohelson and Mr. H. O. For the five vacant seats, eight nominations were lodged, viz., Dr. A. M. Grant, Messrs. R. W. Duder, J. D. Jones. N. A. Nathan, E. A. Price; J. M, Carpenter, H. B. Philcox, And Dr. Milsom. "-'. .' NOTES fcROM THE SOUTH. GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. [BY TELEGRAPH.—-OWN CORRESPONDENT.! y • CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday. The Canterbury Jockey Club has received a good response from ' owners . for the Gr^nd I National Meeting. ': There are 17 horses, in the Grrand National Steeplechase, compar-.d I with 20 at the corresponding ; period last year. The four top weights hold their ground, but outside this quartette it is rather disappointing, to find only two horses in the field with over ten stone, five ■ of the' other 11 being, on the minimum. - In the Grand ~; National ' Hurdle Handicap the '■ position is : much :; more satisfactory. ;.;.■ Twenty-seven ; horses remain' in, y an increase of five: over I last year. It. is a<; good list, 1 apart from i. number, the nine horses at the ; head > of., the ; handicap being among the acceptors. As i for the Winter Cup, the, field numbers 28, i compared "with 32 last year. It is a useful j .field, ;; though not equal yin quality to that of some former years. The best evidence on this point is that 11 horses figure on the minimum, 1 and 10 itloro range • up to only :61b. over the lowest 1 weight. ;: All the minor events have filled well,'; the total nominations being'; 412, — compared with 397 last ; year. Some! of the open-flat races • show a, falling ' off, but a particularly pleasing feature about the list is that minor jumping events, in* cjuding those confined to hunters, have all attracted good nominations^ • ■; Of the 17 acceptors for the Grand National Steeplechase, Omahu. His form to date is only moderate, but he has the reputation of being a good jumper. ~ ' .. The officials of the Christchurch Hunt Club should be delighted with the nominations for the meeting to> be held at Riccarton on Saturday, August 4. There are 19 horses in/the Hornby Steeples. 12 of them being Grand National Steeplechase candidates 22 in the Hurdle Handicap,, including 16 who are in ; the Grand National HurdleHandicap, and 26 in the Brabazon Welter Handicap, among them being 12 1 candidates fbr ih'i Winter; Cap. He did a little work after ; being broken in. but he has been running out on' his owner's 1 ' station io; several months. Nothing much is known of him, but I do not think he is likely to make a good .racehorse. •■ ■:;.,/.:':;,.. yv-;:?-. Speaking of Mr. Greenwood's team reminds me that R.
