■ ■j«. <a?> ■ MEETING AT ELLEESLIE. FRANKLIN AND MATAMATA. BUTE SOUND SCORES AGAIN. The combined meeting held by the Franklin and Matamata Clubs was brought to a conclusion at Ellerslie on Saturday, when there was an attendance of about 10,000. The sky was well charged with threatening clouds, but it was not until about the middle of the afternoon that any rain fell, and then only light showers were in evidence. The meeting was admirably managed by Mr. W. S. Spence, and prompt time was observed throughout in the starting of the various events. The racetrack' was in a, very heavy state, and that circumstance served to add its quota to the uncertainty surrounding the issues of the various events. i The leading event of the programme, the Matamata Handicap, brought out a field of a dozen. Royal Box was made fa/vourite, the bracketted pair, Glen Canny and Gold Jacket, being most fancied of the others. A surprise proved to be in store, and in an exciting finish Mr. W. Casey's gelding got home first. The stewards were summoned after the race to consider a bit of crowding in the concluding stage of the contest. The occurrence was, however, deemed to be acci- I dental, but Downing, the rider of Arch j Laddie, was advised to use every endeav- j our in future to ,keep his mount straight. i The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £42,015 10s, which gave a grand total of £70,897 10s for the meeting. , PIAKC) STEEPLECHASE of £200; second £40, third £20; about 3 miles, I*.
