FIREBALL IN SYDNEY.
ALARMING EXPERIENCE.
One evening recently pedestrians in the vicinity of George and Hunter Streets, Sydney, witnessed the spectacle of a fire ball bursting in George Street, , which, needless co say,' caused a stampede foe shelter. : . ~ * >../, 'At the : time there was a very vivid flash of lightning : in the north-western sky, followed almost simultaneously by a terrific clap of thunder. At the same instant an explosion - appeared to take place at the top of a tramway electric power standard outside thte Hamilton Cafe, from which,a shower of sparks shot skvwards 10ft. or 12ft., and then fell '.to the ground. After the sparks had died away a cloud of smoke went up from ; the spot. ■ ' ' ,'> , f'f People in the stree v _ were seized with panic. Two women on the footpath :in Hunter Street i partially collapsed, while men in the immediate vicinity of the standard scurried in ' all 'directions for safety. . - .-:--. -. ~ ;• .... ;. ! •
