DOCTOR'S LIBEL SUIT.

JURY AWARDS DAMAGES.

DISALLOWED BY JUDGE.

LONDON. March 1

Damages to the amount of £100 were awarded by the jury to Dr. Marie Stopes, birth-control advocate, scientist, and author, who sued Dr. Halliday Sutherland and his publishers for libel arising from statements he wrote la a book criticising Dr. Stope's methods.

The jury in its verdict found that the words complained of were defamatory, but true in substance and in fact, yet not fair comment.

The Lord Chief Justice held that they were statements: of fact. His Lordship said that nobody denied the ability, sincerity, • and honesty of purpose of the plaintiff. Also there was no real evidence of ill will on the part of the defendants. .The jury had found that the words complained of were true in substance and in fact, and therefore it was impossible to depart from the ordinary rule. The only course open to him was to give judgment for the defendants. The Lord Chief Justice gave judgment for the defendants with costs. He granted a stay of execution with the view of an appeal.
