" Spotting the Americans " was the new game indulged in by a large crowd present to see the first appearance of the Oxford eight at Putney. The. two Americans included in the eight axe Kane (Harvard) and Mellen (Middlesex School, Concord). The latter is stroke, and he greatly impressed the spectators. The crew has done only light work.
Barry declared when he witnessed the full course trial of the Cambridge eight from Putney to Mortlake yesterday that this crew is the best he has ever seen at Putney. The crew got smartly away and did the course in desperately adverse weather conditions in 21m. 445., achieving a striking performance.
