Miss Walker was bor at Haddington (Lines.) in 1843, her parents being in rather poor circumstances. Her father was ground keeper to the late Mr. Lamb, of Aubourne.

She was an exceptionally good-looking girl, and after leaving school she easily obtained a situation at a Lincoln hotel.

Later she went to London and entered the service of a wealthy couple, who, having no family or near relatives, bequeathed all their possessions to Eliza Walker when 'they died.

At that time she was just a little over 20 years of age, and she was seized with a desire to see the world. She went to America, and after a spell of travelling about the States settled down in New York in a mansion on Fifth Avenue, where many American millionaires have their residences-

'Hie former Lincoln servant girl quickly adapted herself to her new conditions and surroundings, and became a leader of New York society.

Notwithstanding her changed circumstances. Miss Walker did not forget her loss fortunate relatives in Lincoln and the neighbourhood, and went from America on frequent visits to "them.
