THE EXPORT OF HAM.
EFFECT UPON PRICES.
DEMAND REMAINS FIRM. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN cobbespondent.] CHRISTCHUP.CH, Saturday.
The export market which has developed for New Zealand hams has "caused prices to harden, yet curers say that the demand by the public is just as keen as ever it was. At Christmas time the wholesale price of ham -was Is per lb., and it is -now Is 2d and la 3d per lb.
Men in the curing trade state that the. shortage in .hams was really brought about by the cessation of operations by the factories in the Christmas season. This shortage has now been overcome. Although export was heavy and it was likely to continue to be so, there was still a surplus of rigs in the Dominion, and there should be no anxiety regarding supplies , for the Dominion market in the future. It was denied that there was any shortage of bacon, notwithstanding that seveial grocers have held short supplies. It was stated that any such shortages are the result of the buying arrangements of th grocers. There is no change to report in the retail price of bacon, grocers selling rashers at Is 3d per lb., whole rolls at Is Id, and sides at Is.
