STREET TRAFFIC CONTROL.
CITY'S BUSY JUNCTIONS.
MORE POLICE ASSISTANCE.
The superintendent of police notified the City Council last evening that his department ■ would • provide constables to control traffic from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on week days at the following three points, for £562 10s per annum, being the rate the council now pays for four pointsmen: Junction of Breakwater Road and Emily Place; Customs and Fort Streets; junction of Karangahape Road and Queen Street and junction of Symonds Street, Grafton Bridge, and Karangahape Road, * the question of control of points on Sundays and holidays to be left to the discretion of the officer in charge of the police. The superintendent stated that in future the pointsmen would go on duty at 8 a.m. instead of at 9 a.m.
The Finance and Legal Committee recommended that the offer be accepted. i Mr. E.H. Davis moved as an amendment that the matter be referred back to the committee, with a view to having the control of the points brought under the council. Even if it cost a little more, he considered th« traffic department should have its own men for this work, who could be special constables, trained to give the , maximum v efficiency with the least delay to moving traffic. The amendment was not seconded, and the committee's recommendation . was adopted.
