RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

....... o- ■ ■ _— J BAY of ISLANDS MEETING. 11 INTERESTING .CONTESTS, i • ' —^ — "■•".' '■; ' BOOMERDAY WINS THE CUP. L The combined country meetings were • advanced a further stage yesterday, when I, the Bay of Islands Racing Club brought ' off their gathering, at Ellerslie. For a ■ short period in the morning the weather • assumed a threatening aspect, but only one light shower fell, and the sun com- • ing out subsequently, the conditions were • most pleasant. Lady Jellicoe was present,, and Her Excellency... 'remained until the ■ conclusion of the seventh race. The ' number present was estimated at 8000, ' a good number of visitors attending from ' the Bay of Islands and surrounding ' northern districts. The manakgemjent of i the meeting, in the hands of Mr. W. 8. i Spence, left nothing to be desired. The i musical portion of the programme was i rendered by the 3rd (Auckland) Mounted ■ Rifles Band, and the selections played on > the lawn, contributed much to the ..en- | joyability of the outing. ; , The Judicial Committee was called to- • gether to consider matters relating to two 1 incidents connected with the racing. In 1 the running of the Kaikohe Handicap ( ' two horses—Gum Chips and .Alburnia-— . fell. The' evidence given " went to ' show v that Gum Chips fell as a result of geti ting. on to the heels of another horse, and ' Alburnia/ failing to clear Gum Chips, was | brought down. The unfortunate contre- , temps considered a • pure accident. The other case to engage the attention i of,the committee was a mishap that befel Ruapapa at tFie start of the Cup, by ■which that horse was thrown down. A ' statement by the starter, Mr. C. O'Connor, and evidence given by several of the . contesting jockeys, established the fact < that the affair was accidental. The respective riders of Gum Chips and Alburnia fortunately escaped without serious injury. Alburnia was found to have fractured a leg, and the animal was finally destroyed. A. McCormacy- who" had the mount on Ruapapa, sustained "a broken collarbone and severe abrasions as the result of his fall off that horse. Speculation on the totalisator was brisk throughout the day, the sum of £42,460 10s being handled in connection with the eight events which formed the pro-: gramme. "' » The Jumping Event. The Ohaea wai Hurdle Race attracted a field of eight, Oranga being the popular fancy, with Reretoa next .in demand. Backers of the first-named were early faced with the fact that . they ■ had lost their money, -as the Royal Soulfc gelding only got as far as the third obstacle when he was pulled up owing to his rider losing a stirrup. Peter Amans went into the lead six* furlongs from home, and though Lady Bruce got almost 'level with her rival at the last fence, the St. Amaris gelding had matters all his own way in the run. home. A strong field of 20 was found on hand to contest the Kaikohe Handicap, for , which Dancing, Doll was made favourite, Malafour and Polini being most fancied of the others.. Malatour, who was one of the quickest on his feet, survived all challenges and won nicely. Dancing Doll had every chance to win, but after filling second place to within a hundred yards from home she was in trouble, and was beaten into fourth place. In a field of seven saddled up to contest the County Handicap, 'Broadwood was the one to command most support, the bracketed pair, Cool' Stimulants and Golden Dream, being most fancied of the others. Cool Stimulants,*who found his feet quickly, was always in a position to inspire his admirers with confidence, and he romped in an easy winner. Thirteen went to the post for the Russell Handicap, the) two-year-old Sleepy Sol ruling favourite, Wairarapa, Shebang and Monday commanding most support of the others. That division was, however, to suffer a complete rout. Nocturne had most to say in the early stages, but when heads were fairly in a line for home,' Sheffield cut down the Kilfeby filly, and the Australian ",colt scored an easy victory. * Bay of Islands Gup. Nightraider "Was the only withdrawal from the Bay of Islands Cup, which left a field of nine to contest the leading event. Refinement, was made favourite, the others being backed in the following order:— Irish, Boomerday, Ruav papa, Perfect Day, Stork, Royal Abbey, Glen Canny, Poteen. When two furlongs had been compassed, Boomerday was in the van, and the 1 son of Quin Abbey, carrying the. field along in good style, stayed it right out and won his race decisively from the favourite. After the race the handsome silver cup, donated by Messrs. J. P. English, H. H. Mountain, Vernon Reed, and J. F. Wall, was placed on a table in the birdcage, and in a neat speech Mr. F. Andrewes, vice-president -of the Bay of. Islands Club, paid a warm tribute to Mr. W. H. Wackrow, owner of the winner, Boomerday,' for his sportsmanlike qualities, and Lady Jellicoe, having kindly consented to present the cup, handed the same to Mr. Wackrow amid applause. >; A Dead Heat. / .... . The field for the Kawakawa Handicap was'reduced to half a dozen, Amiform and Infante being the chief fancies. • Golden Bubble actod the role of pacemaker and matters looked bright for the big chestnut at the - distance, but ■ vigorous challenges delivered by ' Amiform and Cool Stimulants "beat the son ,of Absurd, and the two leaders dashing past ,'.' the post locked together, a ckfad-heat was the finding of the judge. A field of a dozen was. saddled up to contest the Maromaku Handicap. Narrow Neck was the one sorted out for particular attention, Te Akilai "being' most fancied of the others. > The summing lip 1 in favour'of that pair worked out quite accurately. Narrow Neck shot up at the half distance, and coming along in resolute style, he won,. comfortably by half a length. . ':' Sir Otway Springs Surprise. The concluding event of the programme was the Welter Handicap, and 17 horses were .on hand to contest the mile race. , When the distance loomed up Royal Abbey looked like interrupting the long string of failures that are down against his name, but Sir Otway, developing a surprising run, cut down the Waikato geldi&g, and scored by half a length. Sir Otway ' figuring 14th- in , order- of favouritism, it may be inferred that the dividend that followed . his victory was of a solid character. Sir Otway is . a three-year-old brother to the brilliant '" Surveyor. Details of the Racing.
