BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. ©INKS "COMPETITION BEGUN. FIRST.AND SECOND ROUNDS. The rinks competition of the Dominion Bowling Association was commenced on the respective greens yesterday. There are 142 rinks, or 568 players, engaged. The weather was beautiful, and the conditions were perfect, except for a slightly troublesome wind. The greens were in excellent condition, playing true and keen. A great deal of 1 interest was taken in the preliminary rounds of the " blue riband" of ■ the tournament, and many interesting games were played. The form displayed by the bowlers was good, and the standard throughout was fairly high. The first and second 'rounds were completed, and several big, scores . were recorded. The arrangements for the competition were very, satisfactory, and results came to hand from the umpires on their respective greens promptly. The rinks competition will be continued .to-day with the third and fourth rounds, all sections moving on to the appointed greens. The following are the detailed results of yesterday's play:— Section A.— (Onehunga Ho. 1.) First Sound.—Parker, Crowe. Leathain, Wilson (Ponapnbr), -C v. Kowe, Marriott, Lowry. : FROZEN MEAT TRADE. '■■/.■■'.' ". \ . GOOD PROSPECTS FOR LAMB. EXPORT OF PORK ADVOCATED MR. JESSEP'S OPINION. A' brief review of. the conditions in regard to the export of frozen meat from I the Dominion was given yesterday by . Mr. J. S.. Jessep, vice-chairman of the \ New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, , who arrived from Vancouver by the \ Maknra after having spent eight months • in London, where he conducted negotia- [ lions with the shipping companies on be- • • half of the, board and investigated the ; conditions of unloading and other mat- • ters. " I think the /prospects 'befoife Klie armors in New Zealand for the next few years are good;", Mr. Jessep said. , " The outlook for lamb is especially bright provided we maintain the quality of our lamb, which places it in a class by itself. I cannot too 'strongly emphasise this point. . There is a good market in the United Kingdom. Quality counts, and the British public is prepared to pay for quality. There is, however, a limit, and the fanners would do well to realise that when the c.i.f. prices exceed Is consumption falls away very rapidly and the small advantage the' Dominion ', gets through the high, price does not compensate- for the reduced consumption. "Regarding beef. I do not think it is worth while New Zealand endeavouring to compete: with South America, Austra- ; lia, Canada and the United States in this ; field. "I am very strongly of the opinion that New Zealand would do better by building up a large export in frozen pork and bacon. Our dairying districts should turn their attention to the raising of pigs. It will be more profitable than raising second quality beef cattle. We will then probably find that the local demand will absorb all good beef cattle available in the Dominion. There is a large field in connection with the export of pork, and side by side with our great dairying industry I hope it will develop. " Farmers, however, must- "realise that as with all -other stock it- will only pay to_ raise hogs of the very best breeds obtainable. A well-bred animal requires less feed, will grow faster and finish better than a mongrel. The Americans hav« the hog-raising industry down to a j science. We in the Dominion, and particularly in the Auckland Province, have all the facilities and climatic advantages to build up a great export-in pork and pork products. I believe in a few years' time we can export several million pounds' worth of pork and bacon. ■ 'I trust the farmers will consider satisfactorily th« special freight rate of Id per lb. which was arranged on pork."
