RAILWAY COAL CONTRACTS. FORCING DOWN PRICES. '' A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, Jan. 11. With a view to being able to reduce the fares and freights on the railways, the Railway Commissioners are trying to force down the price of coal under the new contracts. A number of the coalmino owners are refusing to supply the railways at the reduced prices, and are closing their" pits. It is stated that 1000 miners will thus be rendered idle.
N.S. WALES GOLD OUTPUT. LOWEST EVER RECORDED. SYDNEY, Jan. 11. The New South Wales gold yield for last year amounted to 25,222 ounces of fine gold, valued at £107,139, this* being the lowest output recorded since payable gold was discovered in Australia. STATE MINERS ON STRIKE. MELBOURNE. Jan. 11. As a result of a dispute over industrial conditions, the miners in the State coalmine at Wonthaggi have ceased work.
